Woman shot in face trying to save suicidal father

A Texas woman is lucky to be alive after she was shot in the face last month while trying to stop her suicidal father from killing himself.

Brittany Howard, 24, of Alvin told KTRK that the gun went off as she struggled to get the weapon from her father’s head. The 24-year-old claimed her mother called her saying that her father was acting weird. She arrived at the residence to find him trying to take his own life.

The father, who hasn’t been named, was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon of a family member. Howard said she is upset with the district attorney’s decision as her dad was in a dark place and is sorry for what he’s done.

“I love my dad. It was an accident,” she said.

With the bullet piercing only “three centimeters” from her frontal lobe, Howard has endured three surgeries so far. She currently has a metal plate in her head and a skin graft on her nose.

“I was shot in the face and survived. Not many people have gone through that and can live to tell about it,” Howard told the station.

Howard, who has 2-year-old twin girls and a 4-year-old daughter, has not been able to work since the incident.

The mom—who will need three more procedures— started a GoFundMe on Sunday to offset the costs of “medical, child care, and household bills.”

“I have a long road of recovery ahead of me. Along with 3 to 4 more surgeries before everything is fully completed, from his accident. We are asking anyone and everyone to share the page and help out as much as possible. Also please keep me and my family in your prayers through this rough and tragic time.”

The fundraiser has earned a little more than $4,700 of a $10,000 goal as of Tuesday night.
