U.S. airman shames country overseas

A military man stationed at Lajes Field U.S. Air Force base in Azores Islands, Portugal, is facing felony charges after he allegedly raped and tries to murder a married local woman.

Star and Stripes reports that the incident happened last November, when a 28-year-old unnamed man in the U.S. Air Force, attacked a 26-year-old woman. He raped her, tried to abduct her, and attempted to kill her, but she managed to get away.

Investigating magistrate, Joao Carreira, announced the incident on Wednesday, yet wouldn’t give too many specific details. He did detail, however, that the suspect knew the victim, and she escaped by jumping into the ocean and swimming. A Good Samaritan spotted her and brought her to safety.

The U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal is aware of the accusations. They’ve yet to make a public statement.

The story is developing. Check back for updates.
