The mother of a woman convicted of killing a man while drunk driving, took it upon herself to laugh out loud in a Detroit courtroom as the victim’s family gave statements.
Donna Kosal spent the night behind bars on Thursday after Judge Qiana Lillard had her and another man thrown out of the courtroom for criminal contempt. Kosal was attending her daughter Amanda Kosal’s court sentencing when the incident occurred. Amada Kosal was convicted of killing a man with five children during a drunk driving incident last year.

As the victim’s family gave their impact statements during the hearing, Donna Kosal openly laughed and snickered. Before Lillard ordered her out of the courtroom, she reprimanded Donna Kosal and reminded her of the tragedy the victim’s family was going through.
“Your disruptive and disrespectful behavior disrupted today’s proceedings and you, ma’am, are going to the Wayne County Jail for 93 days. These people are here grieving, saddened because a senseless act took away their loved one and you’re sitting here acting like it’s a joke? Not in courtroom 502. Not today, and not any other day.”
When Lillard ordered her out of the courtroom, Donna Kosal disrupted the proceeding even further by slamming doors and yelling in the hallway. However, after a day in jail, Donna Kosal’s attitude completely changed. As she stood in front of Lillard on Friday morning, she shed tears while apologizing.
“I deeply apologize for what I did. I was under a lot of stress.”
“What you have to understand is as hard as this is for you to see your baby going to prison, imagine what that family feels like when their child is dead. I hope that you learned a valuable lesson from this,” said Lillard.
Lillard ended up giving Donna Kosal a break. She lifted her 93-day sentence and counted the one day in jail as time served.
The victim, 31-year-old Jerome Zirker, was killed on June 23 when Amanda Kosal smashed into him head-on in her SUV, while driving down Beech Daly Road in Redford Township. Zirkler’s death had a traumatic impact on his family and friends, who described him as a great friend and loving father. On Thursday, Amanda Kosal was sentenced to three to 15 years behind bars.
