Police: After-school basketball coach assaults girl at Manhattan private school

An after-school sports program instructor at an Manhattan Upper West Side private school is behind bars after police say he molested one of the female students.

NBC New York reports that a 9-year-old girl was at the IDEAL School of Manhattan on Friday afternoon, playing basketball with her classmates, when the suspect asked her to stay behind to get extra practice. As the other students headed inside to watch a movie, Channing Parker, 22, reportedly took the little girl into a bathroom and forced her into sexual acts.

The victim’s mother learned about the ordeal after her picking her daughter up from school. She immediately called 911 and informed the school.

A few of the residents close to school are calling on the school itself to make sure the situation is taken care of. Resident Shunli Warner said she’s shocked something like this would happen in such a “nice neighborhood.”

“I think it’s so terrible because this is such a nice neighborhood, I’m so shocked. I hope the school district will work with police to enforce the rule and make sure this never happens again.”

A spokesperson for IDEAL stated on Monday that Parker was not employed by the school. He worked for an outside agency called Kids Creative, an after school service. Kids Creative is fully cooperating with authorities during the investigation. Although Parker passed a required background check prior to working with the agency, the IDEAL School cut all ties with Kids Creative.

“Our students’ safety is our top priority,” the spokesperson said. “The IDEAL School has terminated its relationship with Kids Creative effective immediately.”

Meanwhile, Kids Creative terminated Parker after the allegations arose. He’s been charged with sexual assault, criminal sex act and sex abuse.
