Brazilian butt surgery leaves Missouri woman dead

A Missouri woman died Thursday night in South Florida from complications that arose during a popular cosmetic surgery.

Ranika Hall left her Missouri home for South Florida to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure known as a Brazilian butt lift, as reported by CBS News. The surgery took place at the Eres Plastic Surgery clinic in Hialeah, Florida.

Authorities received a call around 9 p.m. on Thursday night that Hall was not breathing. She was rushed to a hospital, but died an hour later.

The Florida Department of Health and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office are currently working with the Hialeah police department to investigate the case.

WPTV reported that Hall had a one-year-old daughter who she left with her mother, Nicole Hall, while undergoing the surgery. Nicole said that she and the rest of her family implored Ranika not to go through with the procedure.

“I tried to talk her out of it. I really did. Her sisters and her brothers tried to talk her out of it.”

The facility is reportedly associated with another death that took place in May 2016. Heather Meadows, 29, also underwent the same procedure, and died after the procedure.

At the time, the clinic was operating under the name of Encore Plastic Surgery and had a different owner. The facility has been operating for over a decade under three different names and multiple different owners.

CBS News reported that Meadows died from organ failure after fat particles clogged the arteries of her heart and lungs. The contamination of her bloodstream could have occurred when fat was transferred during the procedure from the torso to the buttocks.

According to WPTV, patients have a 20 percent higher chance of dying during a Brazillian butt lift procedure.

An attorney for the Eres Plastic Surgery reportedly made a statement regarding Hall’s death.

“Dr. Daniel Calva and Eres Plastic Surgery express their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of our patient who had recently undergone a cosmetic procedure at our center on Thursday evening. Dr. Daniel Calva and Eres Plastic Surgery are deeply saddened by what has occurred and offter their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Dr. Calva is a highly skilled and caring surgeon that is dedicated to providing the highest level of care to his patients.”
