Tragedy: Dad shoots 8-year-old daughter dead after day of shopping

by Ellen Killoran

An 8-year-old California girl is dead after a family shopping outing ended in an apparent murder-suicide.

Capitola Police told KSBW that the little girl was shopping with both her parents at the Capitola Mall on Sunday afternoon. At some point, the father and daughter separated from the girl’s mother and the woman called the police to say that her husband had been making suicidal threats.

She directed them to the family’s car in a parking lot outside a Macy’s, where officers found the 36-year-old man and his 8-year-old daughter, both injured from gunshot wounds.

Attempts to revive the man and the little girl were unsuccessful.

Authorities of not released the names of the shooting victims, and a motive for the presumed murder-suicide is not yet known.
