An Atlanta woman had her throat slit Sunday afternoon when a man tried to rob her as she was paying for parking in the Midtown section of the city.
The suspect is still on the loose after threatening a witness to the attack who tried to stop him. Another witness, unaware of what the suspect had done, offered to help him as he was fleeing the scene.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that a man approached Marla Franks in the middle of the day as she was standing at a pay station. The man attempted to grab her purse off her shoulder but the woman wouldn’t let go of the bag. The police report said that after the woman resisted the robber threatened her, saying, “I will hurt you.”
Franks continued to resist the man until he ultimately pulled a knife on her and sliced her throat, Officer Stephanie Brown told Channel 2 Action News.
“The man then took a knife and cut her throat about 5 to 6 inches,” Brown said.
The mugger then grabbed Franks’ purse and fled the scene.
A witness to the incident, Fernando Bispo, told Channel 2 Action News that he chased the suspect when he saw him fleeing. Bispo was able to get the man to drop the bag, but he stopped chasing him when the man turned the knife on him. He said that he didn’t realize how badly Franks was hurt until he returned the purse to her.
Bispo also said that that he has been terrified since the attack because the suspect is still on the loose.
“I know that he’s out there,” he said. “I know that he can do this again.”
A second bystander said that she witnessed a man jump over the back fence of Kindred Hospital. She didn’t realize at the time that the man was fleeing a crime scene, so she offered to help him when he fell.
The victim survived the attack and was given 17 stitches.
No arrests have been made in the case.
