An Atlanta police officer was still on his first week of work earlier this year when he caught a 12-year-old girl stealing shoes for her 2-year-old sister. Instead of arresting her, he ended up becoming “a blessing” to her family.
CNN reports that in February, City of Atlanta PD Officer Che Milton spotted the young girl trying to take a $5 pair of shoes from a local Family Dollar store. When he confronted her, the young girl started crying and explained that her toddler sister desperately needed shoes.
“I couldn’t put her in the system, being 12 years old, for stealing some $5 shoes,’ Milton recalled. I’d rather just take her home and see what’s going on.”
After asking the girl where she lived, Milton followed her to a small home in Atlanta that was so scant that the family used sheets as beds–without the beds. Milton told CNN that a family of seven, including the girl’s parents and her four siblings, lived in the tiny home, and Mom was trying to clean the house up while holding a toddler on her hip.

The mother explained that her husband worked all the time and she stayed home with the children. She said she couldn’t return to work herself because daycare was too expensive. Milton, who felt bad for the family, went to a nearby pizza shop and picked up four large pizzas for the family.
“I saw the conditions. There was no food in the house and the kids were there,” Milton said.
Since then, Milton has went back several times to check in on the family. Each time he dropped off diapers or other necessities, something he thought his sergeant was upset about when he received a call to go to the sergeant’s office. The sergeant, however, was so appreciative of Milton’s work that he decided to share the story. Within days, the City of Atlanta Police Department shared the story on social media, which brought in numerous people who donated additional necessities.

The help didn’t stop there. In early May, the police department shared the children’s clothing sizes on Facebook, which brought in truck loads of donations from caring citizens.
“The way that Officer Milton handled this incident showed that not only is he here to enforce the law but also to go the extra mile and be a bigger part of the community he is policing.”
Kudos to Officer Milton, who went beyond the call of duty to help a family in need!
