A 19-year-old pregnant woman was fatally shot Tuesday after she and her mother were ambushed in the parking lot of her Beaumont, Texas apartment complex, reports KFDM.
Kera Teel was bringing her mother home from a doctor’s visit in Galveston when three men approached their car.
Around 1:50 a.m., Beaumont police received a call about shots fired at the apartment complex. Police responding to the scene found Teel in her car in the parking lot.
Teel, who was 7 months pregnant, sustained fatal gunshot wounds. She was transferred to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where her baby girl, Kyndal Jae Teel, was delivered. Both Teel and Kyndal died later on.
Kera’s mother was also in the car at the time of the shooting but remained unharmed.
The case is being investigated as a capital murder. Detectives are looking into a robbery of a store that took place near the apartment complex to see if there is any connection.
The suspects are described as three black men, but police do not have any further descriptions.
In a heartbreaking press conference on Tuesday, Kera’s husband, Andrew Teel, revealed that his wife died in his arms. He begged anyone with information on the shooting to come forward.
“There’s 118,000 people in Beaumont. Someone knows something. Please, help me find justice for my wife. Please.”
Kera and Andrew had a one-year-old daughter together. Andrew shared that he and his wife made a time capsule for their daughter, named Laya, to open when she turns 18. He says that his wife wrote Laya a letter that she will be able to read on her 18th birthday.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support the family as they grieve.
Police are offering a $2000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Anyone with information on the murders of Kera and her unborn baby Kyndal is asked to call Beaumont Police at 409-832-1234 or Southeast Texas Crime Stoppers at 409-833-TIPS (8477).
