An Iowa mother is going to prison for intentionally burning her own infant child.
Rebecca Brahier, 36, burned her 1-year-old infant with scalding hot coffee, submerging the child’s arm in the scorching liquid. This led to a frantic emergency room visit where the child was found to have second-degree burns.
She initially told hospital staff that it was an accident, but they became suspicious, due to the severity of the burns, and alerted authorities, according to a KETV news report.
The burns were so bad, according to court records obtained by The Daily Nonpareil, that the infant’s skin was quite literally peeling off.
“The child had severe burns to his left hand and arm, which caused blistering and skin was sloughing off,” the official court documents read.
Why would she do such a thing? Brahier told police it was “an attempt to teach the child a lesson.”
The curious child was simply reaching out for her coffee. Brahier told authorities she committed the horrendous act in order to show the baby that the coffee was hot.
Despite entering a guilty plea, Brahier’s attorney, Peter Tenny, attempted to place some of the blame on the fact that the infant was wearing pajamas.
“The child was wearing pajamas, which increased the severity of the burn,” he said.
When asked to comment before a judge handed out her sentence, Brahier simply said she was “ready to go.”
She was sentenced to five years in prison, after being convicted of child endangerment resulting in injury.
Rebecca Brahier also has another child, a 12-year-old daughter.
