A 10-year-old girl is dead of a suspected homicide after disappearing from her home with her father’s girlfriend’s teenage son.
According to Fox 31 Denver, 10-year-old Kiaya Campbell disappeared on Wednesday night when she left her father’s home to walk to a nearby shopping center in Thornton, Colorado, with her father’s 15-year-old son.
The boy reportedly told police that the pair separated during a sudden rainstorm.
Kiaya’s body was found the next day in a grassy area about a mile from home.
The 10-year-old girl was an upbeat spirit who loved to watch YouTube and share her own videos, showing off her collection of “squishees” and singing Disney songs.
Kiaya’s cause of death is not yet known, but the coroner confirmed to Fox 31 Denver that the death was “other than accidental.” Police announced on Friday that Kiaya’s death was being investigated as a homicide.
On Saturday night, a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody. The suspect’s name is not known, and Crime Online cannot confirm the suspect is the same boy Kiaya was with on Wednesday night.
“Because of his status as a juvenile, his name is not being released,” police said in a statement.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
