A Florida man named Brian Coffee, 55, has been arrested and charged with sexually battering a mentally and physically disabled adult.
Coffee works in Hillsborough County, at an unnamed assisted living facility, according to Tampa Bay Times.
The battery is reported to have occurred on April 2. According to the arrest report, he entered the victim’s room as they slept and conducted the assault. The report also indicates that the victim has the “intellectual level of a child.”
The victim reported the attack to another employee at the facility. That’s when police got involved. A DNA test was performed and a sexual battery examination kit was utilized. The DNA results were a match for the accused and he was arrested.
“To take advantage of them when they’re not only physically unable to defend themselves, but mentally they have no idea what’s being done to them, it’s just tragic,” Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Corp. Larry McKinnon told ABC Action News.
“They end up convincing them that the inappropriate or criminal behavior that they’re engaged in, the sexual activity, that there’s nothing wrong with that.”
Sheriff’s detectives are also fearful that Coffee may have left other victims in his wake, as he’s been employed by a variety of assisted living facilities since 2009, according to Brandon Patch.
To that end, they are seeking the public’s help in identifying any other potential victims of the accused.
The 55-year-old has vigorously denied taking part in the sadistic attack, according to investigators.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information about other potential victims to call 813-247-8200.
