Police: Convicted sex offender beats, sexually assaults and tries to kill little girl just weeks after prison release

A registered sex offender was out prison for only six weeks when he reportedly sexually assaulted a little girl in a Kansas condo last Friday. He’s now back behind bars, facing numerous felony charges. He was arrested the day of the attack and made his first court appearance on Tuesday inside a Wichita courtroom.

KSN reports that Corbin J. Breitenbach, 23, is charged with attempted first-degree capital murder, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated burglary.

On June 11, the suspect allegedly snatched a 7-year-old girl while she was sleeping and “strangled her to unconsciousness, and then took her to an outdoor balcony where he assaulted her.”

According to court documents, the incident happened at a 2nd-floor condominium off of 1400 block of North Smith Court in Wichita, at around 2:40 a.m. The child survived the ordeal, and according to Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett, who recently visited her, she is “doing better.”

Deputy Police Chief Gavin Seiler also visited the little girl and announced she was with her family.

“We are in contact with her and her family. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Breitenbach was released from prison just six weeks prior to the incident. He was serving time after he choked and raped a 22-year-old woman in 2012. He was released in April under strict conditions that he would participate in a rehabilitation program and report regularly to a parole officer.

The suspect’s girlfriend, whose name is disclosed, lived in the complex where the ordeal happened. Her condo is across a small courtyard from condo where the sexual assault occurred, with balconies just 30 feet from each other. The victim was in a friend’s condo spending the night when the attack occurred. Police confirmed that the victim’s family and Breitenbach did not know each other.

Breitenbach remains in jail on a $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 5.
