Young mother kills herself after strangling 8-year-old daughter — exactly two years after husband’s suicide

The little girl survived the murder-suicide attempt, but police believe her mother thought she was dead

A Connecticut woman who was found dead of suicide after apparently trying to kill her 8-year-old daughter this weekend lost her husband to suicide just two years ago, almost to the day.

As Crime Online previously reported, Ivanna Krekhtyak, 36, was found dead in her home near Fairfield University this weekend. Her eight-year-old daughter went to a neighbor’s house after finding her mother unresponsive.

The little girl reportedly showed injuries consistent with strangulation, and investigators told NBC News her mother may have tried to kill the girl before she took her own life. It is possible the girl lost consciousness and her mother believed she was dead.

“We’re looking to interview the daughter,” Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara told NBC News on Saturday. “Obviously she survived, but there’s trauma. There’s some memory issues with regard to exactly what occurred last night.”

The CT Post reports that Ivanna’s husband Vasyl Krekhtyak died almost exactly two years ago at age 38, reportedly of neck compression. The Fairfield Daily Voice reports that he hung himself.

Police have not released the mother’s cause of death, and the girl is currently getting medical treatment.

“The child is under medical care and (the Department of Children and Families) is in charge of making appropriate placement for her,” Fairfield Youth Bureau Detective Beth Irizarry told the Fairfield Daily Voice.

Social media accounts of the deceased parents indicate they may be Russian natives, and it is unclear if the little girl has extended family nearby.

Crime Online will update this story when more information is available.
