Dale Leary and foreign exchange student

Police: Sex offender marries teen exchange student, lures in her younger sister and sexually assaults her for years

A convicted sex offender in Florida, accused of marrying a teen foreign exchange student he was supposed to supervise, is behind bars after luring her younger sister in for sexual reasons.

The Miami Herald reports that Dale Leary, 50, was first convicted in the 1980s when he broke into a woman’s Coral Gables home, tied her up, and sexually assaulted her. Decades later, in 2012, Leary was somehow approved to be a host for a young foreign exchange student, Marta San Jose, 16 at the time. He seduced the foreign exchange student and eventually married her when she turned 18, after divorcing his wife for her.

Authorities said shortly after he married San Jose, he started making plans to lure her 14-year-old sister into his home in Cutler Bay. Once he had the girl in his home, he reportedly sexually abused her for numerous years. When detectives were alerted, they arrested both Leary and San Jose earlier this month.

On Wednesday, San Jose, now 21, charged with numerous sex offenses, pleaded not guilty. Last week, Leary also pleaded not guilty to a number of sexual-related charges.

According to CBS Miami, San Jose’s parents were unaware that she married Leary. They also saw no clues that their younger daughter was being sexually assaulted. San Jose’s father flew to Florida from Spain in 2014. He said that everything appeared normal and that both girls told him they were doing fine. In private, however, San Jose reportedly told her little sister that she wanted to stay in Florida to avoid their abusive parents.

The teen victim was reluctant to talk at first. Miami detectives said that Leary convinced her that he never sexually assaulted her and the she was repressing memories of parental abuse. According to Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, San Jose also tried to convince her sister that their parents assaulted her.

“The older sister manipulated the younger sister to convince her she had been sexually assaulted as a child.”

Eventually, she told police that Leary would supply her with alcohol and make her pose nude while he took pictures of her. She said some of the pictures involved sexual-related poses with her sister while they both were naked. He also began “examining her private parts” to “prove to her” she was indeed assaulted by her parents.

Later, Leary reportedly began performing sex acts on the teen. He tried to convince that it would help her let go of memories of abuse from her parents. She said that the sexual acts happened at least seven times.

Authorities are now concerned that there may have been more victims. Foreign student exchange programs are managed by numerous outside companies and Miami-Dade police currently do not know how many, if any, other students were placed in Leary’s care. Authorities are also unsure which companies require a background check on hosts and which do not.

Anyone with any information regarding Leary should contact the Miami Dade Police Department.
