Police: ‘Dad’ kills daughter, 22, buries himself in dirt to remove her blood from his body

Police say an Oklahoma man who shot and killed his daughter in their home on June 29 not only claimed she committed suicide, but also tried to bury himself in dirt in an attempt to get rid of her blood on his body.

The Oklahoman reports that Ronnie McMullen, 43, told authorities that his 22-year-old daughter, Kailee McMullen, shot herself in the face while inside their Norman, Oklahoma, home, off of the 1700 block of Abe Martin Drive. When police arrived to the home, they noticed Kailee lying lifeless in the entryway of the home and a blood-spattered .357 revolver sitting on a nearby table.

McMullen stared blankly while police questioned him, then allegedly grabbed a towel and tried to wipe blood off of himself. Authorities told him to stop, but he reportedly kept wiping the blood off of his body until deputies had to physically pull the towel away from him. Afterwards, his behavior grew more bizarre when he walked outside and “lay down in dirt” in an attempt to remove more blood.

” [He] began covering himself in dirt while rubbing the shoes he was wearing on the concrete entryway,” the affidavit read.

Afterwards, he allegedly “dug a small hole” and placed himself in it.

It wasn’t until July 5 before authorities arrested McMullen, although they labeled Kailee’s death as “suspicious” almost immediately.

“When you listen to the 911 call, the father states that she shot herself. The evidence that was collected from the scene and as we’ve worked through the initial investigation, that’s when the death became suspicious. We didn’t feel like the things that we were able to gain from the scene connected the story that was told,” Sarah Jensen, spokesperson for the Norman Police Department, told News 9.

According to the affidavit, Kailee lived at home “on and off” with her parents, but she had an extremely strained relationship with her father. Two friends said that McMullen molested Kailee when she was younger. As she grew older, the relationship progressively got worse. In April, McMullen reportedly kept slapping Kailee over and over until her mother pulled a gun on him to make him stop.

Karen Hooker McMullen, Kailee’s mother, was giving her daughter CPR when authorities arrived on June 29. It’s unclear if Karen McMullen actually witnessed the shooting, but just two weeks prior, she praised her husband on Facebook, on Father’s Day.

“Happy Father’s Day to these amazing dads…Ronnie thanks for all of your love and support … I love you so much.”

Ronnie McMullen is charged with first-degree murder. He’s being held at the  Cleveland County Detention Center without bond. The investigation is still ongoing, but detectives said they think the suspect acted alone.
