Police have arrested a Pahrump, Nevada, man and charged him with the murder of his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter, as reported by ABC 13.
Officers determined that Cole Penderson, 38, was alone with the girl before emergency personnel from the Pahrump Valley Fire Rescue Service arrived at the scene, after being called to the residence on reports of a child who had stopped breathing. When they arrived, his mother was attempting CPR on the unresponsive toddler. Authorities stopped her, and transported the girl to Desert View Hospital, where she was pronounced dead as a result of the severe injuries, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Penderson actually admitted to police that he was the one responsible for the unnamed child’s death, though he offered absolutely no motive, according to investigators.
Authorities did note, however, that the 3-year-old’s body was covered in bruises and a number of other visible injuries.
The murdered 3-year-old was not the only child living in the house. The Division of Child and Family Services had to take custody of the other children and deliver them to alternative adult family members.
Engelson was taken into custody and booked into the Nye County Detention Center and charged with domestic violence, child abuse with substantial bodily harm resulting in death and, of course, murder. He is being held on no bail.
The Nye County Sheriff’s Office has noted that the case remains under active investigation, according to NBC 3. They urge anyone with further information to contact them at 775-751-7000 or to email them at NCSO_Detectives@co.nye.nv.us.
