Entire family, including GRANDMOTHER, kills 9-year-old girl by denying her food and water for entire year: Police

Police have arrested an entire family, including a mother, father and grandmother, and accused them of murdering a 9-year-old girl by denying her access to food and water for an entire year, as reported by PEOPLE.

Hawaii residents Kevin Lehano, the girl’s father, Tiffany Stone, the girl’s mother and Henrietta Stone, the girl’s grandmother, were all taken into custody on July 14, according to a statement from the Hawaii Police Department.

The trio has been charged with murder. The indictment accuses the family of denying the girl food, water and medical treatment for about a year before her eventual death, according to court records.

“First responders were confronted with what appeared to be a severely malnourished and unconscious young girl lying on the floor within the home,” a police report indicates.

The girl’s legal guardian was actually her grandmother, 59-year-old Henrietta Stone. The 9-year-old girl was found unresponsive on June 28, 2016 in Stone’s apartment, though both parents live in the same complex. She was later pronounced dead, as reported by the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.

The little girl has only been identified by her age and her initials, S.A.L. On Monday, the girl’s parents made their first appearance in South Hilo District Court. They both pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.

One of the prosectors in the case, Rick Damerville, spoke to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald and laid out the severity of the charges in stark terms.

“This is a real emotional roller coaster for anybody, including me,” he said.

According to Hawaii News Now, State Child Protective Services had been in contact with the family since the victim was a toddler. The girl was failing to thrive, they said, but the agency still allowed her to have daily contact with her parents.

Lehano’s trial will begin on December 4, according to court records. Tiffany Stone’s trial is set for November 13. Henrietta Stone’s court arraignment has not yet occurred.

All three defendants are being held in lieu of $100,000 bail each.
