A British court has convicted a man of repeatedly raping a 6-year-old boy, sentencing him to 17 years behind bars, according to The Independent.
John Bell, 30, faced six counts of rape of a young child and was found guilty in each instance, court documents have reported.
Judge Edward Bindloss admonished Bell during a sentencing hearing, noting that the 30-year-old had groomed the young boy leading up to the repeated rapes. The victim had already been sexually abused, which Bell knew about and, according to court records, used to his advantage.
“This was a course of conduct where you abused him on a regular basis,” he said. “You gave him sweets and took him on motorbike trips.”
“You groomed him, acting for your own sexual gratification.”
Bindloss also noted that Bell encouraged the 6-year-old to bite a pillow during the repeated rapes, in order to endure the physical pain.
“You physically hurt him when you raped him and you told him to bite the pillow.”
The court also stated that the convicted child rapist forced the victim “not to tell his mother about what was happening.”
Prosecuting attorney Jo Kidd spoke to Daily Mail and described the long-lasting implications of the abuse the young victim has been forced to endure.
“There is evidence of exceptional psychological harm to him,” the prosecutor said.
The unnamed victim has been left so traumatized, according to court records, that he no longer plays with other children.
“It’s quite clear he has been deeply affected by what happened to him,” Bindloss said.
Despite being convicted, Bell still denies that he sexually abused the young boy.
