Missing toddler drowns in Tennessee lake just steps from the family home: Police

Tennessee police found the body of a missing 3-year-old boy yesterday floating in Cherokee Lake, as reported by Knoxville News Sentinel.

Jefferson County authorities responded to a report of a child missing at around 6:30 p.m. last night. It took investigators just 30 minutes to find the 3-year-old’s body in the lake, which is only steps from the family’s home. He was pronounced dead at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig confirmed that the toddler died from drowning, according to New York Post. Due to the victim’s young age, his name has not been announced.

McCoig spoke to WBIR and urged parents to keep an eye on their children while near large bodies of water.

“It’s very important that the 3-year-olds are watched if you have them at home trying to watch them. It’s good to have an alarm on your door to see if your door comes open and the child goes out if you don’t have them inside at all times,” he said. “It’s for their own safety, everyone’s safety.”

This is a breaking news story and more information will be updated as it becomes available.

This is the second drowning death to plague East Tennessee in the last two days. A 3-year-old girl, Tameria Richardson, drowned in Douglas Lake on Saturday evening, according to Knoxville News Sentinel.
