A British court has sentenced a mother of two to jail after she led police on a high-speed car chase that a judge called the worst one he’d ever seen.
Megan Nolan, 24, was sentenced Friday to a year in jail after she pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving without insurance, reports Fox News.
A patrol car dash cam caught the entire chase on video. Nolan, who works as a teaching assistant, can be seen weaving through cars and running red lights at 120 mph in an uninsured car.
The chase began after 1 a.m. when Nolan was leaving a Manchester bar to take some friends home. When a patrol car tried to pull her over, she sped away and ran multiple red lights.
Prosecutor Andrew Mackintosh said in court that Nolan admitted to drinking before running from police. She said she panicked when she saw the police lights.
“She admitted the quality of her driving was as shown on the footage. She had no insurance and she said she was a stupid idiot who was lucky that no one had been hurt.”
Judge Martin Rudland called her driving “selfish and ludicrous,” and that it would be “wildly wrong” for him to not send her to prison.
“I have to tell you Megan Nolan that this was the worst piece of dangerous driving that I have ever witnessed in my 15 years on the bench.”
Nolan’s lawyer, Mike Harman, argued that the 24-year-old was under an enormous amount of stress from an upcoming trial in which she is slated to testify as a witness. Harman said that everyone makes mistakes, and Nolan shouldn’t be punished for hers.
“Sometimes thoroughly decent people are only human and humans make mistakes and so do thoroughly decent people, its inexplicable.”
Nolan only stopped when the engine of her Volkswagen Scirocco exploded, according to Daily Mail.
