Tips from the public helped lead to the capture of MS-13 gang member Walter Yovany Gomez in Virginia on Friday, the FBI announced.
Gomez allegedly murdered fellow MS-13 gang member Julio Matute for associating with a rival gang in 2011. According to the FBI, Gomez and a co-conspirator “allegedly struck Matute in the head with a baseball bat, sliced his throat, and stabbed him in the back 17 times with a screwdriver.”
The FBI added Gomez to their Ten Most Wanted list in April 2017, and there’s been a federal warrant out for his arrest since 2013.
“The apprehension of Walter Yovany Gomez is a prime example of the close coordination between the vigilant public and the hard working men and women of law enforcement,” said Timothy Gallagher, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Newark Division. “Gomez will now stand trial for his alleged involvement in a brutal murder which took a young man from his family.”
Gomez is from Honduras and has been in the U.S. illegally. He will remain in custody pending extradition proceedings.
