Louisiana police have arrested a man and accused him of orchestrating an elaborate plot to have his wife kidnapped and tortured, as reported by The Acadania Advocate.
Lawrence Michael Handley, 49, has been charged with kidnapping after allegedly hiring two men to abduct his wife, court records have indicated.
The two men are said to have “stripped, tortured and abused” his wife, threatening rape and murder while “in route to their destination where Mr. Handley was waiting,” court records have noted. His wife has alleged that Handley even bought all of the “items necessary to kidnap, bind, torture and abuse” her.
Court documents also note that the woman was abducted at gunpoint on August 6, right inside of their shared home.
Her captors, Sylvester Bracey and Arsenio Montreal Haynes, both 27, led police on a high speed chase until their van became stuck in the mud. They fled on foot, authorities noted, but managed to drown during their escape attempt. Police found both bodies the next day.
Why would Handley do such a thing to his own wife? The pair has been involved in bitter divorce proceedings, leading investigators to suggest that as a possible motive for his alleged misdeeds, according to KLFY.
His wife, whose identity remains unknown, also told police that her husband had booked airfare to “evade capture for his crimes.” Instead, Slidell Police found the man hiding in a motel, where he was taken into custody.
This isn’t the 49-year-old’s first brush with the law. In 2005, he pleaded guilty to fraud charges.
Handley has been taken to the Lafayette Parish jail in lieu of $266,000 bail. A judge has granted a restraining order that bars him from access to any of the couple’s shared assets. A court date on the kidnapping charge has not been set.
