‘Heart stopping’ video shows alleged drunk driver causing violent head-on crash

Massachusetts police have arrested a woman and charged her with a litany of driving-related crimes after she allegedly drove drunk and caused a violent car crash, according to CBS Boston.

Laura Farrell, 53, of Scituate, was taken into police custody after an evening of erratic driving, which included swerving all over the road, driving on the wrong side of the street and, eventually, slamming head-on into an oncoming vehicle, authorities indicate.

A 16-year-old witness, Christopher Merner, caught the whole thing on video and Cohasset police posted it to Facebook, where it has since gone viral.

In the video, which police call “heart stopping,” you can allegedly see Farrell driving her Jeep Grand Cherokee southbound in the northbound lanes before slamming into a Ford Taurus. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash, in addition to a third vehicle being damaged after being forced to swerve out of the way.

The driver of the Taurus, a 69-year-old woman from Brookline, was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital. Her injuries are said to be “non-life threatening,” authorities note.

Merner told reporters that, in addition to shooting the video, he and his mother tried to persuade the woman to pull over.

“We did what we really could to bring to her back into the right lane without putting our own lives in danger,” he said. “My mom was beeping the horn at her trying to get her to pull back in and to get her attention.”

The crash was so violent that police say it was a “miracle” that nobody died, according to a statement delivered by Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley.

Farrell failed several field sobriety tests, according to Quigley. She also admitted that she had been at a restaurant drinking, the officer notes.

The 53-year-old has been charged with OUI-liquor, OUI-liquor and serious injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to drive in marked lanes.

Incredibly, after being released on bail Sunday night, she failed to make a court appearance on Tuesday. A warrant has been issued for her arrest.
