Alabama police have arrested a woman after allegedly finding her 3-year-old wandering the streets alone, as reported by WIAT.
Derrica Ann Bruce, 22, of Coates Bend was taken into custody after police received a 911 call on October 4 reporting a child seen was wandering the streets. Authorities searched for the child’s guardian for over an hour before finding the right house. Upon locating Bruce’s residence, police told the news station that they could not get the woman to answer the door. When they finally spotted her through a window, creating just cause for entry, police noted she was passed out on a chair. They also said she was visibly pregnant.
After being interrogated, investigator Brandi Fuller stated that Bruce admitted to smoking an illegal substance, according to AL.com. As such, she was charged with the chemical endangerment of a child, due to the fact that she used drugs while pregnant.
Additionally, the 22-year-old was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office has placed her behind bars, pending a $10,000 cash bond for the chemical endangerment warrant and an additional $2,000 bond for the two other charges.
Once she is released, the suspect has been ordered to complete a drug treatment program, which will be supervised by Etowah Community Corrections. It has not been announced if completion of this program will influence the results of her case.
It is not yet known if Bruce has received legal counsel or if her 3-year-old child was handed over to Child Protective Services.
