Is Olivia Newton-John’s ‘missing’ boyfriend alive and well in Mexico?

The former boyfriend of Olivia Newton-John, who was believed lost at sea and declared dead in 2008, has allegedly been photographed in Mexico, 12 years after his disappearance.

Australian weekly magazine New Idea claims that a group of U.S.-based investigative journalists and private investigators obtained “picture proof” of Patrick McDermott living in the small fishing town of Sayulita, Mexico. The photo, which appears on the cover of the tabloid’s November 13 issue, appears to show a man with long gray hair, approximately 60 years old, the age that McDermott would be today.

The Daily Mail reports that the photograph, obtained by U.S. media agency Coleman-Raynor, was found on a bulletin board at a Mexican campsite about a month ago. The photograph reportedly shows a shirtless man, purportedly McDermott, seated on a beach next to an unidentified woman.

Private investigator Charlie Parker told New Idea that he believes it is “highly likely” that McDermott is the man in the photograph, concluding “the widow’s peak is exact.

“The eyes are very similar and the ears extend down on the head in the same distance. I believe it’s him.”

McDermott, vanished in 2005 at the age of 48 during a fishing trip off the coast of San Pedro, California. After a lengthy investigation, he was declared dead three years later, despite the fact that none of the other passengers on the fishing boat Freedom reported seeing him fall overboard.

McDermott, an American cameraman, had an on-again, off-again relationship over a period of nine years with Newton-John, the English-Australian singer and actress perhaps best known for her roles in the movies Grease and Xanadu. The couple had reportedly ended their relationship months prior to McDermott’s disappearance.

Rumors had persisted through the years that McDermott had in fact faked his own death. A 2006 Dateline NBC report raised the possibility that McDermott had escaped to Mexico to avoid paying past due child support for his then 13-year-old son, Chance, to his ex-wife Yvette Nicar.

In a September 2016 interview, Newton-John told Australia’s 60 Minutes that “nobody really knows what happened” to her former partner.
