Prisoner takes the law into his own hands, murders baby killer inside prison cell: Police

A British prisoner is facing murder charges after he allegedly killed another prisoner who was behind bars for hitting and shaking his newborn baby to death.

The Evening Post reports that Liam Deane (pictured), 22, was arrested and charged with murder after he admitted last month to killing his daughter, only two days old.. Deane was sent to the HMP correctional facility in Leeds, England, where another prisoner, John Westland, 28, was serving time for a previous crime.

On Sunday, prison authorities found Deane lying dead inside a cell. Although the details surrounding how the prisoner died is unclear, authorities reported that his death was a homicide. Westland appeared in court on Monday afternoon on charges of reportedly killing Deane. Westland didn’t say much in court, aside from his name and date of birth, and other personal details.

In October, Mirror reported the Deane admitted to repeatedly punching his newborn baby in the face, squeezing her, and shaking her violently. He broke down under interrogation and admitted to detectives that he “lost it” when the baby wouldn’t stop crying. Baby Luna ended up on life support, but later passed away from her injuries. A medical examiner indicated that the infant’s cause of death was blunt force trauma that led to “catastrophic brain injuries.”

“Seeing Luna on life support in the hospital will last with me forever,” Luna’s mother wrote on a victim’s statement. “I can’t describe how that felt. I would not wish it upon my worst enemy.”

Deane was sentenced to life in prison, with a mandatory 10 years before parole eligibility. Westland is due back in court on Thursday at Leeds Crown Court.
