Mississippi police have arrested a woman on suspicion of several counts of child abuse against her helpless infant, as reported by the Clarion Ledger.
Santangela Turner, 26, was taken into police custody Monday after Child Protective Services received a tip that she sent horrific text images of her infant that showcased the abuse, according to reports.
An unnamed witness saw the images and reported them to investigators, records indicate. The texts reportedly show the infant in duress after Turner allegedly choked the baby and wrapped a phone-charging cord around the victim’s neck. Authorities believe she also threatened the infant’s life via text as she held a knife pointed at the baby’s neck. Further pictures allegedly show the infant crying and in obvious pain.
After committing these atrocities, Turner is alleged to have simply left the baby in the woods near her apartment complex, according to Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge.
The sheriff’s department issued a warrant for her arrest, but she turned herself in the next morning, according to WDAM. She faces charges of felonious child abuse. As such, the unidentified infant was taken by Child Protective Services. The agency has yet to indicate if the baby is in decent health after the ordeal, nor have police announced any possible motive for the alleged crimes.
Turner will have an initial court appearance later this week at Jones County Justice Court. It is unknown whether she has obtained legal counsel. Bond has been set at $10,000.
