A Florida woman was arrested on Tuesday after being accused of child endangerment when her own 3-year-old called 911 to complain that she had left her and a sibling in unsafe conditions, as reported by WFTV.
Yajaira Tirado, 26, allegedly left both of her children, ages 1 and 3, alone in an unsafe and dirty home. Cops have stated that a shotgun and ammunition were both located within arm’s reach of the kids. Additionally, both children were found in soiled diapers, authorities have stated.
Amazingly, Tirado’s 3-year-old was able to call police and ask for help, despite having difficulties speaking, according to a criminal report. Dispatchers were still on the phone with the little girl when they arrived at the Volusia County home.
Investigators also noted that there was dog feces spread around the floor with no food in the cupboards and two dogs running around in the kitchen. Police also said they found a hole in one of the doors and when they tried to investigate further they were stopped by a third dog, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal.
When the 26-year-old talked to police, she said that she had just gone to pick up some food and was only gone “five minutes,” the police report stated, a claim that deputies did not believe, considering they were at the home for quite some time. She also said that she had asked a neighbor to check in on the kids, the report indicated.
She faces two counts of child neglect without great harm. She was released on a $5,000 bail. The children were turned over to their father’s custody.
