‘Dad’ suggests suicidal 12-year-old son light himself on fire, shoot himself in the head: Cops

A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized for burns after his own father allegedly advised him to set himself on fire.

According to the Associated Press, Michael Joseph Jensen, 36, of Claremore, Oklahoma, has been charged with child neglect after he allegedly gave his suicidal son advice on how to kill himself. The father is accused of suggesting that his son light himself on fire and shoot himself in the head.

Following the alleged advice, the boy did light himself on fire after covering himself with lighter fluid, but his grandparents, who he lives with, were able to put out the flames. The boy suffered minor burns.

According to the report, the 12-year-old, who has not been identified, had attempted suicide before. The Sun-Herald reports that the boy had tried to suffocate himself with plastic bags. Jensen reportedly told his son that that method wouldn’t be as effective as setting himself on fire or shooting himself in the head.

Rogers County Sheriff’s Maj. Coy Jenkins told the Associated Press that the boy hurt himself following a conversation with his father about killing himself, but that the father may not have been serious.

It is not known if the suspect is currently in custody or has obtained an attorney.
