Arrest in grisly murder of missing roommates: Transgender woman found dead in trash container, 70-year-old man found murdered with hands cut off

Two roommates who went missing in New Mexico earlier this year have been found dead.

KOAT reports that Zakaria Fry, 28, and her roommate Eugene Carrell Ray, 70, were found dead last week Albuquerque, a month after both went missing. Fry was found in a trash container, the Ray was reportedly found in a trunk nearby — with his hands cut off.

A medical examiner reportedly determined that Fry died of blunt force trauma to the hands and face. Ray’s cause of death has not been released, but both roommates were found with multiple skull fractures and facial fractures.

On Thursday, KOB 4 reported that police arrested Charles Spiess, also known as James Knight, for the murder of Fry and Ray. He is also facing a charge of tampering with evidence.

The suspect was reportedly linked to the murders when he was found to be using Ray’s stolen credit card and driving his Mustang. Police later found blood, a baseball bad, tape and disinfectant spray in the car.

“They were possibly all rooming together, and that’s why we have a lot of evidence at that location,” Albuquerque Police Department Public Information Officer Simon Drobik told KOB 4.

“There was a lot of DNA evidence taken, a lot of video evidence,  lots of physical evidence that was tagged into evidence. So it’s a massive case and there’s a lot of connections there. But the main thing is we’re asking the public if they ever saw these three together.”

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact  police at (505) 843-STOP.

Spiess is currently in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
