‘I’d rather be deported than go to jail’: Unlicensed daycare worker breaks baby boy’s legs after slamming him down feet-first: Police

An unlicensed Utah daycare worker is facing felony child abuse charges after she reportedly slammed an infant down so severely that she broke his legs.

FOX News reports 66-year-old Elvira Ortega, who ran an unlicensed daycare in Salt Lake City, allegedly admitted to police that she slammed the baby feet-first onto a hard bathroom floor while caring for him on February 23. Salt Lake Police Detective Greg Wilking said that Ortega was taking care of several other children inside her home when the incident occurred.

“There were numerous children that were being cared for at this house, but it was all unregulated,” said Wilking.

According to police, Ortega claimed she would “rather be deported than go to jail,” after a medical center who treated the boy contacted authorities. Police said that baby was less than a year old.

Authorities declined to comment on the suspect’s citizenship status but indicate that she’s being treated as a flight risk.

The story is still developing. Check back with CrimeOnline as additional details become available.
