Two young children killed, pregnant woman injured when driver runs red light; drags stroller behind car for half a block

Police in New York City said an accident occurred in Park Slope that left a 2-year-old and 4-year-old dead and a pregnant woman injured Monday afternoon.

Authorities told the New York Post that the woman was pushing one of the children in a stroller when a female driving a white Volvo struck them at Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue. Witnesses told WNBC that the driver ran a red light before mowing over the children.

Mayor Bill DeBlasio and the NYPD confirmed that both children were transported to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Two other people suffered minor injuries in Monday’s ordeal, according to the New York Daily News.

WNBC also reported that the stroller was dragged for half a block before the driver stopped. Law enforcement sources told the Post that the driver, who’s in her 30s, was cuffed and will undergo toxicology tests.

“The kids were run straight over, and the driver tried to get away and hit a car,’’ a witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the Post.

“I don’t even want to think about this… Just to know those kids were ran down like a dog.”

Officers on the scene the two children killed were a boy and girl. The boy is said to have been in the stroller while the little girl was walking with her mother. However, police said the boy was not the pregnant woman’s son. Their relation is unclear at this point in time.

Police are investigating the fatal crash.
