Teen leaves newborn baby on porch in freezing weather with umbilical cord attached: Police

A 17-year-old girl reportedly gave birth to a newborn, then left the baby on a porch in Atlanta on early Friday morning, as temperatures dropped to below freezing.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the unnamed teen allegedly admitted to police that she gave birth and decided to leave the baby, with the umbilical cord still attached, on a front porch of a Fulton County home. Police found the baby at the home off of the 3700 block of Leisure Lane at around 3 a.m. on Friday morning after the person who lived in the home contacted authorities.

“A resident at that same location found the baby on the porch and notified police,”  Fulton police Cpl. Partrena Smith said.

According to USA Today, Smith declined to reveal why the teen left her baby behind, and declined to say if the infant was a boy or girl. It’s still unclear how long the baby was left outside in the the frigid weather. Both mom and baby were taken to Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital for medical evaluations, but their current conditions haven’t been released.

At this time, no charges against the mother of the infant have been filed.
