North Carolina police have arrested a man on suspicion of two counts of murder after being accused of killing a pregnant teen, as reported by PEOPLE.
Brian Little, 18, allegedly killed Aiyonna Clarice Barrett on Tuesday, leaving her body in a car by a dirt road. Barrett was carrying a full-term fetus and was set to give birth in early May, thus police are ruling it as a double homicide.
The victim’s mother, Ebony Gomez, spoke to reporters and addressed the suspect directly, asking why he would commit such a horrific act, as reported by WRAL.
“Why did you take my baby? Why was she left alone to die there by herself,” she asked. “My daughter didn’t just die. Her life was taken in a brutal way.”
Authorities have not announced a cause of death or a possible motive as to why Little killed the pregnant 18-year-old. Additionally, they have not revealed if the suspect knew the victim, though a statement from the Southern Pines Police Department indicated that the crime did not appear to be a “random act of violence.”
Police Chief Bob Temme said in a statement that the entire department shares the grieving mother’s “pain and sorrow.”
“Please draw comfort in knowing that the entire Southern Pines Police Department has pledged an unwavering commitment to the relentless pursuit of justice for all concerned,” he wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers will be with you in faith and sympathy.”
Little is being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on April 24.
Barrett was still a high school student and was preparing to graduate in June.
