A Utah mother actually heard the brutal attack that led to her 15-year-old daughter’s murder as the two were talking on the telephone, as reported by WSBTV.
The victim, Baleigh Bagshaw, had returned home from high school on Monday and called her mother to let her know she was OK, as was their usual routine. That’s when someone entered the girl’s home and perpetrating his violent act, according to authorities.
“While she was on the phone with her mother, she was brutally attacked while inside of her home,” said Sgt. Brandon Shearer, a Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman. “Her mother heard the attack going on and then the phone went dead.”
Bagshaw’s mother, who remains unidentified, immediately called a neighbor to check in on the teenager. That neighbor called 911 and, around 3 p.m. that afternoon, her dead body was discovered, as previously reported by CrimeOnline.
“It was a very violent attack,” Shearer continued.
24-year-old Shaun French has been identified as a person of interest. He and Bagshaw had been linked previously, investigators say, and already had an active warrant for three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor stemming from that relationship.
The person of interest is still at large and is considered to be armed and dangerous. Anyone with information as to a possible location for French is urged to call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000.
Bagshaw’s family has started a GoFundMe to raise funds for her funeral.
