New York police arrested a couple this week on suspicion of murder and child abuse, among other charges, as reported by WHAM.
Donald and Alison Blovio, both 38, allegedly beat 3-year-old Panagiotis Stephanides-Vacchino to death, with the toddler passing away on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by CNY Central.
Stephanides-Vacchino was on life support for several days, suffering multiple injuries consistent with repeated child abuse. An arrest report stated that Donald struck the toddler with a belt and intentionally caused his “head to strike a hard floor surface.”
Court documents also noted that the 3-year-old was unable to breathe on his own and had developed bleeding in the brain.
Alison was the boy’s mother and Donald was the boy’s stepfather. Massachusetts Child Protection Services visited the family on several occasions, beginning two months ago.
The couple, however, moved to New York in the middle of their investigation.
Massachusetts police have stated that Donald has an extensive criminal history, though the exact details of these arrests remain unknown. Alison, however, has no prior criminal history.
Donald has denied beating the boy, but did tell reporters that he felt remorse as he exited jail for a court hearing.
The suspects were both indicted on three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree manslaughter, one count of second-degree manslaughter, one count of reckless assault on a child, two counts of second-degree assault, one count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
