Teen girl learning how to drive with mom strikes, kills 2 men in parking lot: Cops

A 15-year-old girl was learning how to drive in a Philadelphia shopping center parking lot Monday night when she reportedly struck and killed two homeless men sitting outside a store.

According to KTRK, the teen was driving a Ford Explorer in the Port Richmond area when she mowed over two men outside of a Dollar Tree. A 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene while a 55-year-old man was pronounced dead a half-hour later at the hospital.

“She was navigating into a parking spot and made a mistake. The vehicle lunged forward, striking two men who were seated at the wall of the dollar store,” Philadelphia Police Captain Mark Overswise said.

While police indicated that the fatal incident was a routine accident, Philly.com noted that someone has to be at least 16 to obtain a learner’s permit in Pennsylvania. The teen’s mother and two other people were reportedly passengers in the vehicle when the fatal crash occurred.

Charges haven’t been filed as police are still investigating. Officials have not yet released the identities of the two deceased men.
