Children spotted housed in pet kennels

A Tennessee woman is in hot water after a viral video showed her reportedly letting children out of pet kennels stored in the trunk of a vehicle.

The footage shows a young child casually climbing out of the trunk area of a Ford Explorer from a kennel.

The woman in the video was identified as the children’s grandmother, 62-year-old Leimome Cheeks, who was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment in the case, Memphis Police Department announced.

“Leimome Cheeks was interviewed and admitted to riding from Whitehaven to Collerville with the children in the kennel,” a police affidavit obtained by Commercial Appeal states. “Cheeks further advised they also drove downtown, however she checked on the children periodically and later removed them from the kennel and put them in the rear seats of the vehicle.”

Cheeks allegedly confessed to authorities that she did indeed drive the children, only 7 and 8-years-old, on the trip which took approximately 35 minutes. The children were kept in two separate kennels as the temperature blazed at 95 degrees.Police say Cheeks instructed the children to get inside of the kennels because there wasn’t any room left in her vehicle.

Neighbors described the woman as a “super good neighbor” and “a real caring person” to Action News 5. Several people online didn’t hold back regarding how they felt about the footage.

“Despicable,” Sonrisa Schweddy wrote on Memphis Police Department’s Facebook announcement of Cheek’s arrest.

“Slave Monster,” Evelyn Price commented.

“What the actual hell is this????” @mataliandy tweeted. “I hope she spends some quality time in a very small space behind bars.”

Cheeks is expected to appear in court Monday morning.
