Authorities in North Carolina have arrested a former high school teacher on suspicion of engaging in a sexual relationship with a student.

According to WPVI, 26-year-old Kayla Sprinkles was arrested earlier this month following an investigation that began several months ago.

The former teacher had been employed by the Cherokee County Schools System when the alleged encounters took place.

A statement from Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer indicated she was arrested on June 7, days after she was indicted on five counts related to engaging in sexual activity with a student.

“Our youth and our students are one of the greatest resources that Cherokee County is blessed to have,” he said. “It is incumbent upon all of us to ensure their safety and well being as they grow and mature.”

Police believe Sprinkles learned of the grand jury decision through social media posts or some other means and initially left the county.

After she decided to surrender to authorities at the Mecklenberg County Detention Center, she was booked and ultimately released on $25,000 unsecured bond.

The Hayesville resident had been the subject of an investigation that began “on or about March 26,” according to a sheriff’s office statement.

Detectives became involved after receiving reports that Sprinkles engaged in sexual activity with a student during her employment as a high school teacher.

Social workers aided in the investigation, according to authorities who said the HAVEN Child Advocacy Center assisted law enforcement because of the ages of some of the minors interviewed.

Sprinkles is set to appear before a judge early next month for a hearing at Cherokee County Superior Court.
