Ex-NFL star raped, burglarized and otherwise targeted women over 50 in months-long crime spree: Prosecutors

A retired professional football player is accused of targeting women over the age of 50 for sexual crimes.

According to Fox News, 34-year-old Kellen Winslow Jr. is facing multiple criminal counts including rape and kidnapping following a crime spree police say began earlier this year.

Prosecutors in the case say that a series of sexually charged crimes was underway in March and lasted until just before he was arrested on Thursday. That arrest came just days after he was arrested for a burglary also linked to his alleged crime spree.

Winslow is implicated in a pair of residential burglaries earlier this month. Detectives say he broke into the home of a 71-year-old woman on June 1 and burglarized an 86-year-old woman’s home less than a week later.

Among the most serious charges concerns the alleged kidnapping and rape of a 54-year-old woman on March 13. Two months later, authorities say he raped another woman, 59, in his vehicle.

Days after that alleged crime, prosecutors claim he committed an act of indecent exposure near Encinitas in San Diego County, California.

Prosecutor Dan Owens described the charges against Winslow as “extremely serious” and targeted society’s most vulnerable citizens.

“The fact that they had the courage to come forward and report these criminal offenses, we take them very seriously and the moment that we were able to proceed with the filing of charges we did so,” he said.

Winslow pleaded not guilty to the charges on Saturday and was subsequently jailed without bail. Reports indicate he is set to appear before a judge again later this month at San Diego County Superior Court.

He had been the NFL’s highest-paid tight end prior to his suspension in 2013 due to reported violations of the league’s drug policy. Winslow could be sentenced to life behind bars if convicted of the charges against him.
