Lucy Letby, nurse suspected in mysterious deaths of 17 newborn babies, is free on bail: Report

A nurse in England who was arrested after 17 babies died in a neonatal unit has bonded out of custody, the Independent reports.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, 28-year-old Lucy Letby is believed to be the woman arrested in Chester, England, on Tuesday amid an investigation into the suspicious deaths of 17 babies at Countess of Chester Hospital between March 2015 and July 2016. During the same period, 15 babies reportedly suffered non-fatal collapses.

Authorities in Chester have not officially confirmed the identity of the suspect, but did confirm that investigators had searched her home and visited the home of her parents.

“Cheshire Police can confirm that the woman arrested on Tuesday 3 July has now been bailed pending further enquiries,” the police department said in a statement, obtained by the Independent, on Friday.

Little is known about the circumstances of the babies’ deaths, and authorities have not released any further details about the conditions of Letby’s bond release.

“We continue to recognise that this investigation has a huge impact on all of the families, staff, and patients at the hospital as well as members of the public,” the Cheshire police statement continued.

According to the Independent, the department had previously described Tuesday’s arrest as “a significant step forward [in] a highly complex and very sensitive investigation”.
