Mom fatally shoots estranged husband in Wal-Mart parking on daughter’s 2nd birthday in front of kids: Police

The victim had asked for a restraining order against his estranged wife, but authorities had been unable to serve it

A Louisiana mother is facing murder charges for the shooting death of her estranged husband, who died after being shot in the chest while in a Wal-Mart parking lot with his family.

Alexandria Town Talk reports that Kayla Jean Giles, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of her estranged husband Thomas Coutee Jr., who died in the parking lot of an Alexandria Walmart after being shot in the chest.

Authorities told the news outlet that Giles and Coutee had met in the parking lot for a custody handoff of three children.

Giles was arrested on Saturday and booked into Rapides Parish Detention Center.

Coutee, 30, was a welding instructor at the Central Louisiana Technical Community College. He reportedly died on the second birthday of he and Kayla’s daughter.

Three children are believed to have been at the scene of the shooting, though authorities have not released details of the circumstances or the ages of the children besides the 2-year-old girl. None of the children were injured.

According to court records obtained by the Town Talk, Coutee had previously accused Giles of abuse. In August, he had filed for an order of protection against Giles, but the court had tried and failed three times to successfully serve it.

The precise circumstances that led to the shooting are not yet known.
