UPDATE: Hours-old baby found in woods with umbilical cord attached; police say mom was person who called 911

UPDATE:

Police in Texas revealed that the woman who reported finding an hours-old baby girl in the woods Wednesday afternoon was the newborn’s mother, according to KTRK.

“The initial reportee is actually the one who had delivered the infant. She had reported the infant was found here. That was concocted. That was not accurate,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. “We believe the birth occurred inside an apartment.”

The news station reported that the woman called the hospital seeking help, and they instructed her to call 911.

The woman’s age and identity are not available at this point in time. Police are reportedly looking what charges, if any, the woman would face.

ORIGINAL Story:

Police in Texas are investigating after reportedly finding a newborn baby girl with her umbilical cord still attached in a wooded area Wednesday afternoon.

KTRK reported that Harris County police were called to the 15400 block of Kuykendahl Road at around 1:45 p.m. Deputies said the baby had a diaper on and was spotted approximately 15 feet from the road behind an apartment complex.

According to the Houston Chronicle, officials said the baby girl was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition. It’s not yet known who the baby belongs to.

“It’s a miracle someone came around here and heard the baby crying,” Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told KPRC.

“The baby is hours old so someone has to remember someone being pregnant around here.”
