A North Carolina man accused of breaking into a North Raleigh apartment on Monday likely didn’t realize he’d end up with one of the most discussed mugshots of the week.
The News & Observer reports that Matthew Lawrence Bergstedt, 27, of Youngsville, reportedly broke into a former girlfriend’s apartment off of the 6300 block of Shanda Drive by kicking in the back door at around 7:30 p.m. A 20-year-old man, whose name hasn’t been identified, was inside the apartment, and apparently grabbed a piece of firewood and started swinging it Bergstedt before he had a chance to steal anything.

Raleigh Police Department responded to the incident, and found Bergstedt hiding out in a nearby vacant apartment. He was arrested without incident. Bergstedt’s booking mugshot shows that the firewood clearly won the battle. He was left with two black eyes, and cuts and abrasions across his face. He’s been charged with breaking and entering and attempted breaking and entering.
According to a jail spokesperson, Bergstedt was released from Wake County jail on Tuesday morning after posting a $3,000 bond.
Many social media users were evidently happy that a would-be robber was stopped in his tracks. While some made jokes about his run-in with firewood, others commented on Bergstedt’s similarities to actor Nick Nolte’s 2002 mugshot. Nolte was arrested by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for driving under the influence. Although the mugshots are arguably similar, Bergstedt is not related to Nolte.
