A young British mother has been arrested for the murder of her newborn baby in a mysterious case of infanticide that is the focus of an an ongoing investigation.
Rachel Tunstill, 26, of Brumley, England, has been arrested on murder charges in connection to the death of her newborn baby this week. Investigators were called to an apartment complex on Monday afternoon, as reports came in about a sudden death. They found the body of a recently deceased infant.
Initially, police were interested in both Tunstill and a 30-year-0ld man; it is unclear if he is the child’s father. The man, who has not been identified, was released without being charged on Friday, as the investigation appeared to zero in on Tunstill. Lancaster Police said in a press statement that the man is no longer under suspicion. “We are completely satisfied that the man who was arrested was not involved in the baby’s death … He has been released without charge and my thoughts are with him at this difficult time.” Additionally, Detective Chief Inspector Jill Johnston said, “I would like to thank the community for their co-operation and understanding during what has so far been a difficult and sensitive enquiry and I am sure that co-operation will continue.”
Investigators have not specified the baby’s cause of death, except to say that multiple injuries were observed.
Tunstill was due for a court appearance on Saturday.
