Florida boy shoots self with felon’s gun found in home

The gun belonged to his mother’s boyfriend, a convicted felon

A 4-year-old boy shot himself in the chest after he found a handgun in a dresser at home — a handgun that never should have been there in the first place.

According to the Associated Press, the little boy, Roshad Richardson, is now in stable condition after being treated at a local hospital, where he had surgery. His mother Delicia Forte told the Tampa Bay Times that Roshad was likely going to be okay and would be coming home soon. “I have a strong backbone and I’m just grateful my son is doing great. He’s talking, he’s alive, he’s stable, he’s everything,” Forte said.

Forte’s boyfriend, Akia Thomas, has been arrested and charged with possession of a weapon as a felon, among additional charges. The boy was home with Thomas at the time of the shooting. One other child who lives in the home was at school, and Forte had left to take another child to daycare at the time of the shooting, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“This is obviously a horrible accident and we’re still trying to determine what caused it,” Col. Donna Lusczynski of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office reportedly said at a news conference.

According to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records obtained by the Tampa Bay Times, Akia has an extensive arrest record, and served prison time in 2011 on a drug charge.

“He shouldn’t have [a gun] around him or be around [the children],”  Col. Lusczynski said in the news conference.
