Actress Mischa Barton says someone slipped a “date rape” drug into her drink during her birthday celebration Wednesday — leading to a bizarre meltdown that was caught on video Thursday morning.
Barton volunteered to be taken to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation after concerned neighbors called 911 after observing the former “The O.C.” actress rambling incoherently in the yard of her West Hollywood home. One neighbor chose to take a video recording of the meltdown, which ended when Barton fell from a fence she had been hanging on.
Barton has since been released from the hospital, and told People magazine she believes someone surreptitiously dosed her with the drug GHB, or Gamma Hydroxybutyrate, a central nervous depressant commonly known as the “date rape drug.”
“On the evening of the 25th, I went out with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. While having drinks, I realized that something was not right as my behavior was becoming erratic and continued to intensify over the next several hours,” Barton said in a statement to People. “I voluntarily went to get professional help, and I was informed by their staff that I had been given GHB. After an overnight stay, I am home and doing well,” the statement continued. “I would like to extend a big thanks of gratitude to the professionals at Cedars-Sinai for their great care and professionalism. This is a lesson to all young women out there, be aware of your surroundings.”
Barton had been celebrating her 31st birthday.
