Shooting on Las Vegas strip kills one, police standoff with gunman continues [UPDATED]

UPDATE: March 24, 7:44 p.m. ET

The shooting suspect has reportedly surrendered to police after more than a four hour standoff.

A gunman on the Las Vegas strip killed one person and wounded another before barricading themselves on a bus.

The area near the Cosmpolitan hotel on the strip are on lockdown as police and the shooter remain in a standoff.

KNTV reports the incident occurred at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas at around 11 am local time. One victim was taken to the hospital in unknown condition. Another was pronounced dead.

While the shooter isn’t at the hotel, Las Vegas police instructed guests to stay in their rooms. The assailant is said to be holed up on a bus near the Cosmopolitan.

“This incident is being treated as a barricade at this time. There is no credible information that there is a second suspect,” Officer Larry Hadfield told CNN.

Hadfield said police are currently negotiating with the suspect and working to take them into custody.

“They (cops) were just saying, ‘Active shooter, get off the bridge. Active shooter, get off the bridge,’” a witness who was on the MGM skybridge at the time told the New York Daily News. “People I think were still standing around trying to look. Cops just started pushing us off the bridge.”

KLAS obtained the following statement from The Cosmopolitan:

At this time, we can confirm Las Vegas Metro Police Department is investigating an ongoing incident on Las Vegas Boulevard near The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.  The safety and security of our guests and CoStars is our first priority.  We are cooperating fully with law enforcement officials and have no further details pending investigation.  Additional questions should be directed to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department.”

According to USA Today, hours earlier a group of burglars in pig masks were seen attempting to break into a Rolex store located near The Cosmopolitan and the Bellagio. It is unclear whether the incidents are related.
