Good Samaritan mom, son murdered by homeless man they were helping: Police

A mother and her 13-year-old son were found stabbed to death in their home Thursday morning — and a homeless man they had reportedly been helping get his life back on track has been arrested for the double murder.

According to the Telegraph, police said Tracey Wilkinson, 50, was pronounced dead on her Stourbridge, England, property while Piers was pronounced dead at the hospital. Peter, 47, Piers’ father and Tracey’s husband, sustained stab wounds to his chest and back and is in serious condition, according to Yahoo News.

“Our family are devastated at the loss of Tracey and Pierce. They were extremely loved by all of their family and friends,” Peter and Tracey’s daughter Lydia said in a statement obtained by the Telegraph.

West Midlands Police reportedly arrested Aaron Barley, 23, just a half hour after discovering the stabbings. Barley reportedly led authorities on a high-speed chase after stealing the Wilkinson’s Land Rover Discovery.

The pursuit came to an end when Barley reportedly smashed into a brick wall 10 minutes from the Stourbridge home.

Lydia explained in the statement that while their family often helped local homeless people, her parents “did not provide refuge for” Barley or any other homeless people. However, she pointed out that the Wilkinsons assisted the man within the past 12 months.

West Midlands Police said Barley was charged with Piers and Tracey’s murders and the attempted murder of Peter. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

“We don’t think this was a burglary or a robbery,” a police spokesperson said, according to Sky News. “What has unfolded here this morning is horrific and heart-breaking. Police and ambulance were confronted with an awful scene: a man, woman and boy all with very serious stab injuries.”
